Total Joint Orthopedics, Inc. (TJO) is pleased to announce the official launch of its Klassic® Knee System with Aurum® Technology at the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons’ (AAOS) 2022 Annual Meeting. Aurum® is the first step as part of TJO’s multi-year plan to reduce the use of Cobalt Chrome in orthopedic implants. “Our team has been working diligently for several years to find a material that can rival cobalt chrome in strength and hardness, and we are thrilled to introduce the first cobalt chrome alternative to our portfolio,” said Erin Hofmann, CEO of Total Joint Orthopedics.
The patented ion beam enhanced deposition (IBED) process ballistically bonds a titanium nitride (TiN) coating to a titanium femur substrate for significantly improved wear-resistance, abrasion-resistance, and surface hardness when compared to cobalt chrome. The revolutionary surface provides a premium implant without the deliberate addition of common metal sensitizers such as nickel, cobalt, and chromium. Titanium is 50% lighter than cobalt chrome, and the Aurum® Femur more closely replicates the weight of native bone, making it an exceptionally strong, lightweight implant designed for longevity. The Klassic® Femur with Aurum® Technology made its debut earlier this year and has been well-received by surgeons across the country.
Christopher E. Pelt, MD, of the University of Utah, will present “Aurum® Technology: The New Gold Standard™ in Joint Replacement Material” this week at the Academy’s Innovation Theater on Thursday 3/24/22 at 1:30pm. An early adopter of and advocate for Aurum®, Dr. Pelt is passionate about the goal to eliminate cobalt chrome in total joint replacement. “It’s time to remove cobalt chrome from the human body,” he said.
